Cervantes' masterpiece Don Quixote de la Mancha gets an extreme makeover. Set in modern-day La Mancha, New Mexico, the story follows the tale of Alonzo Quijana, a student at La Mancha High School. Alonzo is an outcast who doesn't fit into any of the preapproved social groups. He's a loner who dreams of a better time: when a single man could change the course of tomorrow and knights upheld justice, chivalry and all things good. But, like most outcasts, he's bullied and picked on until the pressures of high school become too much. Alonzo's mind snaps. He sheds his old skin and is reborn as Don Quixote de la Mancha. Arming himself with a wooden sword, a street sign lance and his old Schwinn bike, he sets out to protect the meek and save distressed damsels. Teaming with another former misfit, Sancho Panza, Quixote is now ready to right all the wrongs in the world. First stop is the Toboso Coffee Shop, where Don Quixote instantly falls in love with Donna, the overworked gal with a cynical side honed razor sharp. He dubs her his beloved Dulcinea. This hard-edged chick has no time for the crazy rants of a make-believe knight. But Don Quixote's unflinching love and gentle madness melt her icy heart, and she starts to see the world as it could be, not just as it is. Fighting windmills at the local miniature golf course and reclaiming the Golden Helmet of Mambrino (which is really just an old Chevy hubcap), Don Quixote's madness is infecting the town. Concerned for his health, his loving sister Denise is racing to find a cure for his insanity. But who's to say what's sane? And is the cure worse than the disease? Exploring the real-world violence of places like Columbine and Virginia Tech, Quixote is a musical comedy that takes a serious look at teen angst. With the pressures to fit in, the fragile line of popularity, and the thin grasp we all have on sanity, can one lone voice in the crowd make the world a better place?
A fabulous musical for middle school performers and audience!
