Walter Hebert waits nervously in the dark for his adversary. He stalks his prey and, at the same time, he knows he's being stalked himself. This hilarious cat-and-mouse game includes a 57-pound complaining (offstage) cat named Cleopatra. And the mouse, of course, is paranoid Walter. Playing the devil's advocate is Walter's wife, Edna, who tries to keep him from getting rid of "puss puss." As it works out in a funny/horrifying moment of "black comedy," Walter gets rid of Edna! Cleopatra, however, remains and now she's determined to wipe out Walter.

This play, which scored impressively in several major play contests, begins with a man spending an ordinary evening in his ordinary home with his ordinary family. Then a psychiatrist enters. The man, it seems, is not at home but in a hospital. His family, we learn, is dead … or are they? After the doctor leaves, the man's wife returns to ask if he is still fantasizing that his family is dead. His wife, it seems, is real … or is she? When she leaves—at play's end—the man and the audience must decide which reality is the real one.
