Synopsis
Young Eddie, a lovable imp, asks his widowed father, "Don't you think it's time you got married again? A growing boy needs a mother and a lonesome young man needs a pretty wife!" Eddie soon finds suitable candidates: the lovely nurse in the apartment upstairs, who sometimes plays ball with Eddie; also an appealing and friendly beauty contest winner. At the same time it's necessary to ward off a bossy neighbor, who is promoting a "nice, sensible girl." When the stunning Rita appears on the scene and Tom begins to do a little courting of his own, Eddie warns him: "Watch out for girls with skinny eyes! In the comic books the good ones always have round eyes." Tom has his hands full trying to cope with Eddie's school problems, his job, and the three lovely girls who seem to adore Eddie. But he finds himself especially drawn to one of them, and when Eddie goes to summer camp, Tom takes this girl along for a visit and breaks the news to Eddie that he has made up his mind. Eddie is heart-broken at Tom's choice and disappears from camp. There is a tense midnight scene as the frantic Tom stands helplessly by, while men make plans to drag the lake. His relief when he hears that Eddie is safe helps him to realize which girl he really loves—and she is Eddie's choice, too. This unusual comedy with its sparkling dialogue, laughter, and serious moments ends with a hilarious scene, in which Eddie tries to coach his father on how to propose, and the right girl gives him an answer.
