This rollicking farce of the Old West unfolds in Miss Katy's saloon. In a fast-paced poker game, to the accompaniment of rinky-tinky piano renditions by barmaids Sally and Flo, a gamblin' woman by the name of Lou produces "one big ace from some secluded place" to win the deed to Katy's establishment. With the help of "an eastern dude who's a rude, crude, prude" and Little Nell ("pure and sweet can't be beat; we'll let her help when we cheat"), Katy and her cohorts retrieve the business.
The Saga of Katy is a great old-fashioned good vs. evil melodrama. It's a lot of fun to produce and bigger is always better.

This script was designed on the rhyme. While that makes it easy to memorize the lines, the difficulty came when I tried to get my students to break the sing-song sound of the rhyme. The judges want the play to sound like everyday talk. The set design, the costumes of the era and the accents were all fun. It is a lighthearted farce amidst a plethora of serious, dark plays that are available. The relationships between the characters, along with good character portrayal, are critical to the play. It was suggested that we add more music, like in the longer 'thinking' scene. We practiced with lowering the saloon lights while the narrator spoke and we followed that character with a series spotlights.
