Synopsis
A teacher asks, "What's the first step?" The student answers, "To find the common denominator." From that innocent premise, Special Class explores the dreams and disappointments of a disabled child in our society. The text also includes informative notes on the original rehearsal process. The notes prove to be helpful both in preparing performers to portray characters with disabilities and in describing how standard acting exercises may be adapted for the performer with a disability. This play is a challenge for actors of all ages and a moving, haunting experience for every audience member. The original cast was a mixture of children and adult actors.
