Synopsis

Set in the transformative summer of 1969, A Trip to the Moon tells the story of people reaching for their dreams … dreams of love, dreams of equality, dreams of the stars. Told around the time of the moon landing, this vignette-style play is comprised of 16 scenes, each named after an iconic song from 1969. From a girl trying to convince her parent to let her go to Woodstock in “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” to a woman trying to get a job at NASA in “Bad Moon Rising,” to a soldier giving the new guy a reality check in “Fortunate Son,” to a group of protestors showing a girl how to fight for what’s right in “Come Together,” these scenes and more use humor and heart to teach us about who we once were and reflect on who we could be and remind us that to achieve the impossible, we must reach for the stars.

Customer Reviews

"This was a great play for our high schoolers to work on. Lots of opportunity for character work and to introduce students to the art of directing."
Review by Rich Johnson, Albany Academy, Albany, N.Y.
"A vignette play that shares multiple perspectives from 1969, the year humans landed on the moon. At times funny, at times sobering, it is a quality view of an important time in American history."
Review by Cameron Loss, Sutton High School, Sutton, Mass.
"This is a great vehicle for young students and large groups. It is a vignette play that allows each actor to have a key role in a scene. Great for class study as well."
Review by Dorathea Kelly, Campus High School, Haysville, Kan.
"This was a great choice for a large cast. The text is written with great dignity and there is good opportunity for comedic and dramatic skills to be taught. Many set pieces can be reused throughout the play and the acting is really what is on display for the students. The themes, even the ones more adult in nature, are approachable for teenagers."
Review by Cole Lowe, Fairview High School, Fairview, Pa.
"Nice script for a "first show of the year" spot. It got the kids' feet wet without too much struggle for learning content. Great script for flexible staging. Can be very intricate design or next to nothing on stage. Good for challenging director's and actors' creativity with how far characters can go."
Review by Erin Vail Davidson, Rocky Mountain HS, Meridian, Idaho

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

"Given the challenges of creating theatre these last few years, I was immediately interested in the vignette style structure. We created a flexible scenic design that reused elements in multiple scenes, which was very helpful for our process. "
Tip by Richard Buchanan, Jemicy School, Owings Mills, Md.
