Synopsis

Street language is filled with derogatory terms for the "halfies"— children of mixed race. The people who believe "black is beautiful" reject them because they're not black enough; Hispanics reject them if they don't speak Spanish; whites reject them because they don't look white enough. Caught Between Two Worlds explores their dilemma through the experiences of Andrea, a mixed race, vulnerable 15-year-old, who wonders to which world she belongs. Except there is not just one Andrea. Three Andreas represent the children often overlooked: Andrea White is focused on meeting the status quo; Andrea Brown has a deep desire to keep her South American heritage; Andrea Garcia is caught in the middle, struggling to figure out where she fits in. This play, which deals realistically and dramatically with their need to belong, will resonate with many. It may also bring new insight to the young people who may have dealt with them cruelly. Depending on the ethnic make-up of your community, it is the author's intention that you adapt the play to your own predominant racial mix.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

"Everything took place in Andrea’s room on one side of the stage, I used the other side of the stage for the flashbacks such as the store, lunch and living room. At the beginning, when the girls were messing with and making fun of Andrea, I placed them in the front of the stage off to the side in the pit area. I made the store clerk a women instead of a man."
