Synopsis
What price would you pay to protect your family? In a world gone mad would you surrender your identity to save your life? To save your children? Enid and Herman Grosch were refugees from Amsterdam when they landed in America in 1939. At Herman's mother's insistence, they erased their Jewish identities and embraced the Episcopalian church. Now, at the turn of the 21st century, they must confront old and unresolved fears as their long-kept secret begins to unravel. While Herman helps Naomi and Saul Baum, an Orthodox Jewish family, wrestle with their son's terminal illness, he is forced to confront the demons of his past, upsetting the balance of his marriage and questioning the nature of his soul. Who is he really? In this heart-wrenching drama touched with humor, Lowe explores issues of identity, the price of safety and the redeeming power of truth. A powerful and original drama.

Customer Reviews
- "Backsliding in the Promised Land is extremely dramatic, highly emotional/sensational, and certainly conducive to a gripping stage play. It is also very apropos to this time in history as the story of the Holocaust is very much in the forefront. The audience, which was captured from the beginning, continued throughout. They just loved it."

Hints, Tips, and Tricks
- "I created the set to rotate with four separate walls and backgrounds. We combined two and then used different furniture for each. This helped to make the scenes different and distinct. There were windows with curtains, pictures and plants in each, making them separate from each other. We had a hospital bed, couches, chests, tables and chairs. At each scene, the crew would rotate the background (or walls) and add the appropriate furniture."
