Karen Schaeffer was born in San Antonio and developed her love for theatre during her formative years at Seguin High School and Southwest Texas State University. She worked onstage and backstage in community theatre and met her husband, Max, during an audition in Victoria, Texas. They moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where they raised two sons, Jon and Alex. In Iowa, Schaeffer completed a business degree through the University of Phoenix and rediscovered her love of writing. After years of acting and volunteering in local theatre and on approaching her 50th birthday, Schaeffer saw a scarcity of comic roles that she believed honestly represented mature women in contemporary society. That observation became her impetus for writing Girls’ Weekend. Since Girls’ Weekend, Schaeffer has authored two romantic comedies with farcical undertones, Choices and Forgotten. She is currently writing several new plays, including another farce, the book for an original musical and a drama. Schaeffer is a member of both the Dramatists Guild and the American Association of Community Theatre.
