Large-Cast Version. The Little Prince may have returned to his own tiny planet to tend his Rose and look after his Sheep, but for a short enchanted time he returns to us and comes alive on stage. This play/musical tells the story of a world-weary and disenchanted Aviator whose sputtering plane strands him in the Sahara Desert and a mysterious, regal "little man" who appears and asks him to "Please, sir, draw me a sheep." During their two weeks together in the desert, the Little Prince tells the Aviator about his adventures through the galaxy, how he met the Lamplighter and the Businessman and the Geographer, and about his strained relationship with a very special flower on his own tiny planet. The Little Prince talks to everyone he meets: a garden of roses, the Snake and a Fox who wishes to be tamed. From each he gains a unique insight which he shares with the Aviator: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly." "What is essential is invisible to the eye." At length, both the "little man" and the Aviator must go home—each with a new understanding of how to laugh, cry, and love again.

This play (adapted from the musical by the same authors) includes the required use of a CD of incidental music and sound effects which brings a heartfelt, lyrical quality to the production.

Customer Reviews

"This is a very good adaptation of the book. The sound cues that are available are really good, but I recommend working with them from the beginning of the rehearsal process so the actors can get used to the timing of them. "
Review by Kevin Welsh, Columbus East High School, Columbus, Ind.
"This is a magical script for one of the worlds most insightful and poignant stories. "
Review by Chris Hamby, Theater Works, Peoria, Ariz.
"This production provides "visual eye candy" for the audience. Students' creativity soared with masks, fabric sunsets, puppets and a miniature bi-plane."
Review by David Helmstetter, North High School, Phoenix, Ariz.
"This is a richly rewarding play that challenges the performers and audience to contemplate the big issues of life. It is effective story telling with dramatic impact."
Review by Patti Bell, Penn High School, Mishawaka, Ind.
"This adaptation of Saint-Exupery's classic tale provided my students with meaningful text to perform. They were exposed to existential themes of deep philosophical truth and timeless characters."
Review by Jen Burgess, Delta Woods Middle School, Lee's Summit, Mo.
"This is the best possible adaptation of The Little Prince that I could imagine. The projections added so much to the productionÑsomething that audiences didn't expect ... All in all, our production of this play was a success, both artistically and financially."
Review by Lenny West, Maury County Arts Guild, Columbia, Tenn.
"An excellent adaptation—retains the poignancy of the book while bringing it to stage."
Review by Stephanie Barton-Farcas, Nicu's Spoon, New York, N.Y.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

"Let your students listen to the demo track in order to get a better understanding of how the pacing of the show is supposed to go!"
Tip by Krysta Ott, William Chrisman HS, Independence, Mo.
"Colorful costumes attract young children. Make sure to double cast the actors."
Tip by Rosio Lockhart, Ysleta High School, El Paso, Texas
"First and foremost, let your imagination run wild. The way this play is written, anything is possible. I found casting to be very flexible—males or females could play most of the principal roles. The ensemble can do wonders if utilized correctly. Simplicity and the use of suggestion with props/sets worked very well."
Tip by Lenny West, Maury County Arts Guild, Columbia, Tenn.
