"Sunday Gold focuses on two 12-year-old girls, one white, one black, who work at a gold mine in Gold Hill, N.C., in the 1840s. They spend 12 hours a day rocking a large wooden trough, washing out gold flakes from piles of ore. Although they played together as younger children, slavery long since separated them. While Annis, a young slave girl, was 'hired out' to an abusive hotel owner, Lizzie's father moved their family to Gold Hill. Now they find themselves together again, working at the mine. Through the play, Lizzie and Annie negotiate the racial barriers that divide them. Ultimately they learn about things that gold cannot buy: education, friendship and freedom. Sunday Gold is honest theater for young people, with a sharper edge than most. Instead of providing pat answers to the questions it raises, Sunday Gold invites discussion … about the time and about these compelling characters." (Raleigh News & Observer) Commissioned by the Raleigh Little Theatre in partnership with the North Carolina Museum of History, Sunday Gold had its premiere at the Raleigh Little Theatre, followed by a professional touring production performed at educational institutions and museums throughout the state.

Customer Reviews

"What I love about this play is that it addresses biases, both racial and gender biases. The play takes place 150 years ago, and it astonishes me how many biases the play addresses are biases we still face today."
Review by Pamela DiPasquale, Director, Children's Theatre of Maine
