Synopsis

Marcia Hope has just been invited by Bradley Jenkins to witness his execution for the murder of Marcia's granddaughter, Julene, who appears in Marcia's mind asking her to forgive Bradley for his crime. In a series of reenactments, we discover how Julene was seduced by Bradley's dark energies; how they drove the back roads of the South and far West robbing homes and terrorizing lonely widows. And how Marcia—unwittingly?—was instrumental in Bradley's capture and Julene's death. But even at the moment of Bradley's death, Marcia refuses to bestow upon Bradley the mercy he so desperately craves. In revenge, Julene and Bradley appear together in Marcia's mind to haunt her into forgiveness which may be a long time in coming. Winner of the George R. Kernodle Playwriting Contest, the Pulse Ensemble Theatre Chamber Theatre Festival and the Boston Theatre Works Festival of New Plays.

Customer Reviews

"Hope 'n Mercy was a smashing success receiving an Award of Excellence!"
Review by Doug Miller, St. Joseph's High School, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada
"It was a powerful production and one well suited for student directors."
Review by Jo Durst, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, Miss.
"It was a very successful production. The play was selected and directed by a student-director who was in grade 12. The cast and crew was made up of all senior-high students in grades 10, 11 and 12. We first performed in our community at our school's Dessert Theatre and it was received with rave reviews. A week later we entered in the Alberta Zone 2 West Drama Festival in Spruce Grove. While there, the students won two awards: Best Actor (the boy who portrayed Bradley Jenkins) and Best Production. By winning Best Production, our school won the right to represent the zone at the Alberta High School Drama Festival (provincials) in Red Deer. Once again at provincials, the students performed very well and won Honourary Mention for Best Professional Conduct."
Review by Peter Taylor, Holy Redeemer Catholic High School, Edson, Alberta, Canada
