Drama/Comedy. By Lowell Swortzell. Cast: 6m., 8w., may be expanded. They're strong. They're wild. They're brave. They're wonderful! They're America's folk heroines, brought to life on the stage. We know all the men: Paul Bunyan, Davy Crockett, John Henry, even Babe the Blue Ox. But how many of us know the larger-than-life gals who share the world of tall tales with them? Yes, we know Sweet Betsy from Pike by her song, but not by her heroics. A lot of young folk today know little about Rosie the Riveter and even less about Bess Call and Sal Fink. Yet they deserve their moment in the sun, and Women of Wonder gives it to them with stories full of gusto and exaggeration—accented by folk music! The four plays together make a full evening of theater, or they can also be used individually. One or two of the tales would be ideal for a drama class project, and "Rosie the Riveter," in particular, would make an ideal competition piece. Resources for study and workshops included. Flexible setting. Approximate running time: 1 hour, 15 minutes.
