Story theater folklore with audience participation. Adapted by Flora B. Atkin. Cast: 8 to 18 either gender. Some voyages set out for exploration. Some sail for trade, and some for treasure. The schooner Skupper Dup, however, sets sail in search of folklore. When they find it, the crew is transformed into the stuff of legend—ravens and crabs, gods of the sea, players of steel band drums and blowers of conch horns. These bilingual stories are gathered from American ports of call, from Hawaii and Puerto Rico, Alaska and the Virgin Islands. The audience is no mere onlooker to the voyage. The ship is the performing area, and the crew enlists the audience in hoisting the mainsail, swabbing down the decks, and joining in the sea chanteys that set the rhythm of their work. Open staging. Approximate running time: 50 minutes.
