Bud, Not Buddy (90-minute manuscript)
Bud, Not Buddy (90-minute manuscript)
"Hitch a ride on this compelling journey … enormous fun even at its most poignant. Reginald André Jackson handily adapts the Newbery Medal-winning novel by Curtis into a vivacious theatrical amalgam of narration and action … The play sweeps us along, interweaving Bud's touching and comic journey with the mottoes he concocts and fond memories of his deceased mother [and] is eventful enough to keep adolescents and adults intrigued." —The Seattle Times
Comedy/Drama. Adapted by Reginald André Jackson. From the novel by Christopher Paul Curtis.

Cast: 8m., 3w. with doubling. Set in Michigan during the 1930s, Bud, Not Buddy tells the story of 10-year-old Bud Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes, and his quest to find his father. Bud's journey sets him on the trail of a jazz band known as Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. A flier for one of Calloway's shows leads Bud to Grand Rapids and Calloway, the man he believes is his father. Bud gets into all sorts of trouble along the way in this story, filled with uncanny wisdom, which offers a set of hilarious "Rules and Things" designed to help our resilient young hero navigate a world of confusing expectations. Rich with adventure and humor, Bud, Not Buddy is a coming-of-age tale for young and old alike. The novel also won the Coretta Scott King Award. Flexible stage for multiple settings. Approximate running time: 90 minutes.

Also available: 100-minute playbook

Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan, the setting for many of his books. He was a great reader, but as a youth he could not find books that "were about me." After high school, Curtis spent 13 years on the assembly line of Flint's historic Fisher Body plant, hanging 80-pound car doors on Buicks. This left him with ...More
