Running in the Red
Running in the Red
"Opens fast and never lets up with one-liners and classic lines from vaudeville. A nostalgic look at America's golden age of radio as seen through the eyes of some of its zaniest inhabitants." —Citizen-Times, Asheville

"Although I may be biased, I think that Running is a gem to be found by any community theatre. I have been raving to several theatres in the area that they need to mount it." —Emilie Buske, Interim Artistic Director, Onstage in Bedford (Texas)

"Karl Tiedemann's Running in the Red is both actor and audience friendly. The cast had a great time in rehearsals, and subsequent performances were very well received. It is a great show, and we were honored to do it." —Bob Couture, Producing/Artistic Director for the Roustabout Players, Troy, New York.

"Our preview night had a group of senior citizens who lived in that time period, and they thought it was the best thing. We had numerous patrons see the play three or four times because they thought it was so hilarious and because it had machine gun pace and timing!" —Emilie Buske, Interim Artistic Director, Onstage in Bedford (Texas)

"When we perfomed Red … teachers, superintendents, assorted guests sought me out and commented on the show in terms of 'Why haven't we seen this on Broadway?' … They said it was so funny, better than things they've paid top dollar for. They wanted to know how we found such a great choice of play."
—Linda DaCosta, Bergen County Technical School, Paramus, New Jersey.
Comedy/Farce. By Karl Tiedemann.

Cast: 8m, 3w or 6m, 5w. It's 1934, and the vaudeville team of Jerry Walker and Eve Williams is about to break into the big time with their own coast-to-coast radio comedy show. But Eve's already tired of her Gracie Allenish "dumb blond" character and threatens to quit so that she can return to college and finish getting her degree in psychology. However, her plan founders when she learns that a young relative has embraced Bolshevism and given away all her money to the local Communist Party! Worse, a hard-bitten newspaper columnist begins to sniff around, and Eve and Jerry must prevent him from discovering that Eve is broke, brilliant and inadvertently supporting the Reds. Add to this mix two crazy gag writers, a dubious potential radio sponsor, Eve's Yale professor fiance, a stuffy lady from a publishing house, and a fictitious serial killer, and the result is a hilarious mix of one-liners, crosstalk, and wild physical comedy. One int. set.
