Val Smith is the author of numerous plays which have been published and produced nationally. Her first full-length drama, The Gamblers, won the Playhouse on the Square's Mid-South Playwright's Competition, and was produced at American Stage Theatre in New Jersey in 1992. Her second full-length, Ain't We Got Fun, was commissioned and produced by Actors Theatre of Louisville in the 1993 Classics in Context Festival—The Roaring Twenties. She is the recipient of awards from the Kentucky Women's Foundation and the Kentucky Arts Council. Her most recent full-length play, Marguerite Bonet, is published in Best Plays by Women of 1998. Her 10-minute play, Meow, premiered at the 1998 Humana Festival.
