Tales from Jewish folk literature. Adapted by Flora B. Atkin. Cast: 7 to 8 actors. Dig 'n Tel introduces young audiences to one of the richest folk cultures in the world. These four tales transport the audience to an archeological dig on a tel (hill) at a crossroads in the Middle East where a shard from a clay pot, a scrap of cloth woven with gold and silver threads, and a fragment of a scroll are found. To whom did they belong? With a blast of the shofar, camel bells, or a Hebraic tune, the members of the expedition are transformed into sailors, kings, fools and the wind to act out stories about each of the discoveries. Dig 'n Tel not only reflects the liveliness of Eastern storytelling, with its ingenious plot inventions, suspense, and surprise endings, it also contains distinguishing features particularly prevalent in Jewish folk literature: indestructible optimism under adverse circumstances; a strong sense of justice; a reverence for supernatural wisdom; the ability to laugh at oneself; and an intellectual approach to everyday problems. Simple set. Approximate running time: 50 minutes.
