Drama by Jane Kendall. Adapted from Charlotte Bronte's novel. Cast: 4m., 9w. Jane Eyre, the new governess, is fascinated with gloomy Thornfield in spite of the maid's hints that it may be haunted. She loves her sprite of a French pupil and the kindly housekeeper, and when a dark, handsome man comes striding in and fires questions at her, she demands his business … and then discovers that he is Mr. Rochester, her employer! He is a man of contradictions, sometimes gay and sometimes moody, and Jane senses a secret trouble. On one occasion she finds that he has been struggling for his life with some unknown assailant. Then, in one of his contradictory moods, he orders a round of parties. Aristocratic guests arrive, and it is clear that Lady Blanche intends to be mistress of Thornfield. Lady Blanche fears a rival in Jane and her snubs are hard to bear, especially since Mr. Rochester seems merely amused at them. Jane understands why soon, for he proposes, and Jane joyfully accepts. They are about to be married, and then tragedy strikes. It is revealed that he has a wife, a mad woman, the mysterious veiled woman of the east wing. Jane leaves, and Mr. Rochester stays on alone. In a powerful scene the mad woman sets the house on fire, and Mr. Rochester risks his life attempting to save her. The final scenes are irresistibly beautiful as Jane and Mr. Rochester realize their love at last. One int. set.
