Salt & Pepper
Salt & Pepper
AATE Distinguished Play Award (2003, Elementary/Middle)

Kennedy Center's New Visions/New Voices Program

"Genuinely moving…its unspoken message of racial harmony is the play's strength." —Los Angeles Times
Drama. By Jose Cruz Gonzalez.

Cast: 3m., 2w. Salt & Pepper explores family, friendship and illiteracy. Salt's grandfather can't read or write. He's ashamed to tell anyone, and his silence has had a devastating effect on the entire family. Salt can barely read, and Pepper, his new friend, reads voraciously. Together they discover a past, the secrets of which are revealed in an old box of mysterious postcards. This play was presented at the Kennedy Center's New Visions/New Voices Program and had its premiere at Childsplay in Tempe, Arizona. "Illiteracy and the high price it exacts on those who can't read as well as their loved ones is the theme of Jose Cruz Gonzalez's thoughtful, one-hour family drama…Salt & Pepper certainly has a timely theme that should ensure interest from youth theaters all over the country." (The Scottsdale Tribune) Simple staging. Approximate running time: 55 minutes
