The father blames the mother's indulgence, but she protests that it was only to balance his sternness that she tried to be gentle with the boy. The father insists that the act sprang from a puppy love affair. But he is fighting the voice of his own conscience, and soon that voice becomes audible to us as we see re-enacted the scene that led to the fatal act.
