Musical comedy. Based on the storybook by Flavia Weedn. Book by Doug Haverty. Music by Shelly Markham. Lyrics by Bob Garrett. Cast: 3m., 3w. (with optional chorus.) Based on the internationally popular book (a true story) by artist/poet Flavia Weedn, this is a story of family, a story of coming of age, a story about the importance of dreaming and—ultimately—a story of love. This new musical explores the whimsical, yet practical world of a small, loving family during World War II. Due to financial hardships, 12-year-old Flavia, her younger brother and mother are forced to relocate and move in with Flavia's grandmother. This is where the story begins, near south central Los Angeles, when Flavia meets her first dream maker, her "Uncle Jack." He teaches her to dream, to imagine and to appreciate the beauty of the unique qualities each person is given. Jack's dream, however, is to fly a plane for, and serve, his Uncle Sam. His departure is met with mixed emotions, and the temporary (and eventual permanent) loss to the family is met with unselfish love and strength. The play charts Flavia's course through self-acceptance and her eventual metamorphosis into the family's inspirational anchor. This play was commissioned by the award-winning, nationally recognized Access Theatre. The world premiere took place under Flavia's guidance in her hometown of Santa Barbara, Calif. Unit set. Approximate running time: 1 hour, 25 minutes.
An optional accompaniment CD is available for use with this show. See Rental Info for details.
