L.M. (Lucy Maud) Montgomery (1874-1942) was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The wife of a minister, she was a journalist and schoolteacher before she entered the literary world with her highly acclaimed first novel, Anne of Green Gables. The book met with immediate success, and it has been widely translated. The impact of the novel's heroine, Anne Shirley, with her high spirits and wild imagination, was so strong that Montgomery wrote six sequels to the original. These works include Anne of Avonlea, Chronicles of Avonlea and Anne's House of Dreams.
