Paul Mohrbacher was born in Duluth, Minn., and has lived in the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis/St. Paul all his life. The Chancellor's Tale is Mohrbacher's first complete play, begun in 1987 shortly after the pope's visit to the United States (an event figuring in the "tale").
