Laura Hembree lives in New York City where she has worked as a writer, systems manager, cab driver, political organizer, blackjack dealer, choreographer and waitress. Car Pool, her first play, premiered at the Detroit Repertory Theatre and received its New York premiere with Rattlestick Productions at Theatre Off Park. On the strength of Car Pool, four-time Tony winner Zoe Caldwell and Broadway producer Robert Whitehead selected Hembree for the Paul Green award, a national award that distinguishes an outstanding new artist in the American theater. Hembree is a member of the Dramatists Guild.
