Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in Philadelphia in 1923. They met in art school and married in 1946 after Stan's service in World War II. They then began a successful career as a magazine cartooning team. In 1962, they published their first children's book The Big Honey Hunt with Theodore (Dr. Seuss) Geisel as their editor. This launched the Berenstain Bears children's book series which has grown to more than 200 titles. The characters have been featured in three TV series, as well as several stage shows and museum exhibits. Stan passed away in 2005, but Jan continues to create Berenstain Bears books with son Mike.
