Greg Leaming

Greg Leaming is the associate director of the Asolo Repertory Theatre, where he has directed The Play's the Thing, the world premiere of Men of Tortuga and his own adaptation/translation of Anything to Declare? He is also the director of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training. His translation/direction of A Flea in Her Ear won a Dallas Theatre Critics Association Award for Best Direction and a Leon Rabin Award nomination for Best New Play in 2004.

Prior to coming to Florida, Leaming spent 25 years working in regional theater. From 1997 to 2001, he was the director of artistic programming for Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Conn., and was appointed acting artistic director for the 2001-2002 season. At Long Wharf he directed the world premieres of Going Native by Steven Drukman, Abstract Expression by Theresa Rebeck, The Third Army by Joe Sutton, Syncopation by Alan Knee and An Infinite Ache by David Schulner. Prior to joining Long Wharf Theatre, he was the artistic director of Portland Stage Company, where he directed, among others, the world premieres of Losing Father's Body and Church of the Sole Survivor (both of which received W. Alton Jones New Play Awards) and commissioned and directed the world premiere production of Jeffrey Hatcher's highly acclaimed adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. Leaming was the producing director at Hartford Stage Company from 1996 to 1997 and the associate artistic director there from 1984 to 1992. In 1998, he directed the off-Broadway premiere of Constance Congdon's LIPS. Other theatres for which he has directed include George Street Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Southwest Shakespeare, Dorset Theatre Festival, Hangar Theatre, Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Florida Stage Company, Merrimack Repertory Theatre and Philadelphia Drama Guild.

Leaming has also spent a great deal of time developing new work for the theatre, having done so with organizations such as New Dramatists, New York Theatre Workshop, New York Stage and Film, Cape Cod Theatre Project, The Gathering at Bigfork and Theatre of the First Amendment. He served on the board of directors for the Connecticut Aids Residence Coalition and has been a panelist/observer for the Maine Arts Commission, Massachusetts Council for the Arts, Connecticut Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Leaming is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.
