Shirley Mier composes music of all kinds, in the theatre and in the concert world. She has been active for many years as a music director and theatre composer in the Twin Cities, and her works have been commissioned and performed in venues such as Stages Theatre, Shakespeare in the Park, and the Minnesota Fringe Festival, to critical and audience acclaim. Theatre works include Madeline's Christmas, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, music for Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night, and Alexander at Delphi, a one-act musical drama based on events in Alexander the Great's life. Mier earned her B.A. in music at Grinnell College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in composition (with a minor in theatre arts) at the University of Minnesota. Her award-winning concert music includes works for orchestra, concert and jazz band, chamber ensemble, voice and piano. Her pedagogical piano duets are published by Alfred Music.
